Title Leather Flying Jacket
Accession Number 2006.21
Description Leather A-2 Jacket. Condition is poor. Insignia on chest has been removed. Name is on left chest. Black B-26 drawing on back.
Has small bell attached under right collar (Lucky Little San Michele Bell, Capri 1944) ... lucky charm maybe! (at least it got this pilot home)

"The Lucky Little Bell of San Michele" were made by monks of the Isle of Capri during 1943-44 and military servicemen purchased these while visiting Isola di Capri for some much needed R&R. 12th & 15th AAF pilots and crewmen wore these bells as their favorite good luck charm on their lapel or as their zipper pull. It is probable that this charm flew over WWII combat and came back with the crew member safe and sound. Wonderful & scarce piece!

This WWII good luck charm is made of .800 silver (common silver content of Europe during that time) and has gathered a wonderful dark & even patina throughout the bell. The bell produces a really soothing chime.
